Hello

The Thoughtful 6 was the name for a collaborative work placement project between Thoughtful, Stockport College and six of their 2nd year graphic design students. In January 2009, Thoughtful moved their entire studio into the College for six months to give the students an insight into how a design agency functions.

Chris Shearston

What inspired you to want to become a designer?

I cant really pinpoint one event that inspired me as I’m sure it was many factors. My interest in web design and photoshopped images around the Internet was the first thing to get me actually designing, this first step into Photoshop and realizing its potential was perhaps the most important.

Who is your favorite designer/design agency?

This changes often so I will just mention a few people who I have been looking at recently. Jason Munn of The Small Stakes produces wonderful screen-printed posters. Another designer I have been looking at is Scott Hansen on iso50 and I have a few of his posters on my walls at home. I love the way Universal Everything is set up and the work they produce is fantastic.

How did the designer influence you?

Jason Munn has pushed me further into screen-printing and inspired me to work with simple yet witty designs of one or two colour. Scott Hansen’s use of vibrant colour as well as his eye-catching designs. Universal Everything opened my eyes as to what is possible by mixing technology with design.

What is your favorite piece of design?

Recently the work of Universal Everything on the Faber Finds book series. I like the simplicity of the design and then after researching it further I am in awe with the actual process behind each book’s production.

You can read more about the project here.

What influence’s you creatively other than graphic design?

I try to keep up with video talks on the website TED. I’m also a fan of the letterpress and its mechanical nature.

What qualities do you think you will bring to the project?

My knowledge of the screen printing process, computer software and internet design.

Where do you see yourself in ten years time?

Hopefully working in a nice design agency doing interesting work.

What do you hope to get out of the project?

The opportunity to learn more about design and how to get work produced in a more realistic environment.
